MSc 04 - Évaluation de l’impact du bois sur la consommation d’énergie et confort visuel dans un environnement architectural

Hoda Jafarian Maîtrise, Architecture, ULaval

Problématique

Wood is a naturally available resource in the region of Quebec and besides its mechanical, economical and environmental benefits, wood is a living organism that has long survived on the earth. It is warm to touch and evokes positives memories. Although we are aware of its physical properties, the impact of using wood on visual comfort and energy consumption remains unknown.

L’objectif de la recherche

There are two main objectives in this research

– Study the effect of wood installation on energy consumption. The purpose of this step is to study and compare the distribution of daylight in the space for each experiment.

– Study the effect of wood on visual comfort in workspaces. This step focuses on the effect of location and color of wood inner coating on brightness and contrast of the space.

Méthodologie

This experimental research analyses the quantitative effects of wood in terms of daylight factor (DF) and daylight autonomy (DA) and qualitative effects in terms of brightness and contrast of the space as well as CIEL*a*b. For the purpose of this research HDR photography, scale model, Photolux system, which consists of a calibrated photo-luminancemeter and Radiance, is used. Scale modeling provides the most accurate way to study quality of daylighting. calibrated photo-luminancemeter allows to collect and analyze complex datasets, correlate luminance distribution patterns efficiently and with high accuracy, specify regions of interest and apply masks to represent human visual zones. The photos will then analyzed in Photolux and to give us information on Daylight distribution within the space, daylight factor and contrast. Beside physical scale model studies, Radiance, a recognized computer model is used to extract the daylight autonomy of the space, a relevant indicator of the energy efficiency of the proposal.

The study will test the hypothesis that careful use of wood in interior spaces enables us in providing comfortable spaces that should be more responsive of users’ preferences, as well as potentially more efficient in terms of daylighting and energy use. This research aims to provide architects and designers with information on how to benefit from wood to create sustainable, comfortable and energy efficient spaces.
